This is the shift in direction currently unfolding at Juventus. More than half a decade of misguided projects has damaged the image of Italy’s biggest club, and they need to bounce back as soon as possible.
Juventus is struggling badly in the race for a Serie A top-four spot. That target is crucial for their future plans, but at this moment, Juve seems to have decided that, whether they qualify for the Champions League or not, they must act.
Following Spalletti’s Path
Juventus does not necessarily need Champions League qualification to keep Luciano Spalletti. According to Italian media, the two sides are negotiating contract details until 2028. This is a strong message from the board. John Elkann, the club’s owner, has publicly praised Spalletti, stressing that he has brought new energy and a winning mentality. At Juventus, such a statement carries more weight than any press release.
What Spalletti has achieved in just five months in charge is considered highly valuable. Results may not yet meet expectations, and they may fail to hit their seasonal target, but the transformation in spirit, philosophy, and identity he has instilled is exactly what Juve needs to rebuild. Since Andrea Pirlo in 2020, Max Allegri (2021–2024), Thiago Motta, and Igor Tudor, Juventus have endured too many failures from unrealistic projects and rushed decisions. Spalletti, with his experience and clear philosophy, is seen as the anchor Juve desperately needs to stabilize and avoid drifting further.

Juventus: Spalletti, Lewandowski and the Short-Term Strategy
Tying their future to Spalletti also means Juve will implement the plans he proposes. He wants to add at least three players of proven class, experience, and winning mentality. These would be leaders, guides, and sources of inspiration—qualities Juve currently lacks. At the Continassa training center, three names are being mentioned: goalkeeper Alisson Becker, creative midfielder Bernardo Silva, and striker Robert Lewandowski, with the latter two potentially available on free transfers.
The “Lewandowski Project”
Among these names, Lewandowski is the number one target Juventus wants to pursue. The Polish striker has the talent, leadership, experience, and winning mentality Spalletti desires. His age (37) raises concerns, but examples like Luka Modric, who revived Milan at 40, or Olivier Giroud, who helped Milan win the Scudetto at 36, show that veterans can still deliver. Lewandowski remains fit and could play at the top level for another 2–3 years, perfectly fitting Juve’s needs.
Juventus’ efforts to bring Lewandowski to the Allianz Stadium can be seen as a “special operation.” They are in regular contact with his agent, sending scouts to monitor him in the Champions League and World Cup qualifiers, and even asking Wojciech Szczesny—Lewy’s current teammate at Barcelona—to help persuade him. Juve know they are not alone in this race, with Milan, Roma, Manchester United, and Middle Eastern investors also interested.

Juve needs Lewandowski to rebuild a forward line that knows how to score. Jonathan David and Lois Openda—signings that lacked planning and did not fit Spalletti’s requirements—are no longer in the picture. Retaining Dusan Vlahovic is a top priority to save costs, while Randal Kolo Muani remains a useful target after his successful half-season spell.
Lewandowski–Vlahovic–Kolo Muani is the dream attacking trio Juve wants to see next season. The shortest of them, Muani, is 1.87m tall—around 10cm taller than David (1.78m) and Openda (1.75m). Physical presence alone would be a major upgrade. Juve will do everything possible to make this dream a reality.
Thuram for Ugarte?
Alongside strengthening the attack with Lewandowski and Kolo Muani, Juventus are also focusing on midfield, a long-standing weakness. Their target is Manuel Ugarte, a central midfielder out of favor at Manchester United but still important for Uruguay. Juve have sent scouts to watch him during the current FIFA Days friendlies and may act in the coming weeks.
To secure Ugarte, Juve could let Khephren Thuram go the other way, of course at a fair price. If Juve fail to qualify for the Champions League, the youngest Thuram brother may be sold to balance finances. Manchester United and Liverpool are among the clubs interested in the French midfielder.
